ROSWELL ROGERS FAMILY CHRONOLOGY

[This data regarding the family of Roswell Rogers was assembled in the
1980s-90s as a research tool, and the chronology was updated last on
18 June 2005.
It is meant as a timeline, and does not have ALL details of the family.   For
information on the earlier years of
Roswell Rogers' family and some
ancestors, data will be found in the "Lands" monograph which has been long overdue for
publication.   It should be posted on this site in the next couple months,
when proofing is finished. - James Allen Rogers, 6/18/05 ]

1821, Roswell and Wealthy Rogers quitclaim all their property in East Haddam,
Middlesex County, Connecticut, following their farm mortgage being
foreclosed.   This occurred
3 September 1821.   Their removal from East Haddam is
evidenced by a "Letter of Transmittal" issued by the
North Lyme Baptist Church, of
which they had been founding members in 1810.   The letter was dated
19 October
1823
.

1829, Erastus C. Rogers sells his half-acre lot and house in East Haddam for
$36, and may have followed his family to NY a short time thereafter.

1830, Federal Census, lists
Roswell, Roswell Jr. and a William Rogers all in
the
Village of Hamilton, Madison County, New York.   Immediate neighbors of
the two Roswells are Isaac Comstock and Samuel Comstock, on either side.
Perhaps it was Comstock land they were renting, since these
Rogers did not own land
in that county.

1830, Federal Census lists Nathan Chappell (brother of Wealthy, and
brother-in-law to Roswell Rogers) in Leroy Twp., Geauga County, Ohio.

1831, & 1832, Nathan Chappell votes in Leroy Twp. Elections.

1832, William and Roswell Rogers have been named in an 1830 lawsuit in
Madison County, NY, resulting in a deficiency judgment whereby a business partner,
Asher Starkweather, has his land sold (in 1832) by the Sheriff to help satisfy
the debt.   The fourth business partner was Nathan Chappell (brother of
Roswell's wife Wealthy), who also owned no land in the county.

History of
Tioga County, Penn., implies William and Roswell Rogers [Jr.]
arrived and settled near Sabinsville,
Tioga County, Penn., in the early 1830s.
Roswell [Jr.] is listed there in the 1840 U.S. census.   Nearby settlers
(including some Ackley family members) came from Madison County, New York.

1833 (8 Oct),
Roswell, Erastus C., and Joseph Noyes L. Rogers are listed
sequentially in an election poll book for Leroy Twp., suggesting they traveled
together to the polling place.

1834 (7 Apr), E. C. “Rodgers”/Rogers (aka Erastus C. Rogers) elected as one
of the Supervisors of the Highways for Leroy Twp., along with Otis Warner.
Subsequently he has trouble documenting that his work was completed on roads in
his district.

1834 (30 Dec), Roswell Rogers grants mortgage to Orin Wilson. Vol. 19, page
486.
Lot 27 in Range 7, Township 9. Sixty-two 1/2 acres in Leroy Township. $161
(subsequently released). Page 427 in Gen 1. Index to Mortgages,
Geauga
County
.

1834 (21 Dec), Joseph N. L. Rogers marries Roxania Brainard, in Madison Twp.,
Geauga County (a Twp. that in 1840 became part of Lake County).

1834, Israel Comstock of adjoining Thompson Twp. (just east of Leroy)
mentioned in Leroy Twp. Record Book.

1835, E. C. Rogers elected as one of he Supervisors of Highways for Leroy
Twp.

1835 (31 Jan), Roswell Rogers receives deed to property from Charles M. Reed
(possibly a non-resident landowner).   Vol. 19, page 485.
Lot 27 in Range 7,
Township 9 (62.5 acres).
  This was just a bit west of what is known as “Hell’
s Hollow,” a steep rocky 300’ deep valley through which Paine Creek flows
northward to
Grand River.

1836 (9 May), Joseph "Noras" L. Rogers and family are “warned out” of Leroy
Township by the Constable S. E. Carter, to forestall the Twp. from having any
potential liability for their economic support.   This, even though his
parents
Roswell and Wealthy and other relatives lived in the Twp.   It was not
uncommon in Leroy Twp. at that time, and carried over from the same practice in
New
England
.   Joseph would have been about 25 years old, married to Roxania, and
had an infant, Eli S. C. Rogers [In Civil War Pension papers, Eli would later
claim Huntsburg, Geauga County, Ohio as his December 1835 birthplace.]

1836, Nathan Chappell elected as a Supervisor of Highways in Leroy Twp.

1837, Roswell Rogers taxed on 1 horse valued at $40, 5 cattle valued at $40,
tax $1.02 – Geauga County Ohio Tax Duplicates, Leroy Township (p. 260)

1837 (20 Mar), Roswell Rogers grants mortgage to John M. Warner & John P.
Andrews.   Vol. 23, Lot 27 in Range 7 Township 9.   62.5 acres in
Leroy Township.
$250 (Subsequently Released) P. ? in Gen’l Index to Mortgages, Geauga Co.

1837, E C Rogers witnesses an Apprenticeship arrangement for a girl named
Asenath Cummings in Leroy Twp.

1840, The northern parts of
Geauga County become Lake County by Act of the
Ohio Legislature.

1840, Roswell Rogers taxed on 5 cattle valued at $40, tax: $.56 – Lake County
Ohio 1840 Tax Duplicates,
Leroy Township.

1840, Leroy Township, Lake County, Ohio Federal Census 17/3, p.121

             Head of Household:   Erastus Rogers

             1 male               20<30               [George R. Rogers? b. ca 1813 or 1820]

             1 male               40<50               [Erastus Rogers? b. ca 1798]

             1 male               70<80               [Roswell Rogers? b. 1764]

             1 female            60<70               [Wealthy Rogers? b. ca 1779]

             1 female            90<100             [Lydia Ackley Chappell, age 93]

1840, Federal Census shows Lydia Ackley Chappell (Widow of Noah Chappell, a
Revolutionary War veteran), age 93 in 1840, living in the household of Erastus
Rogers.   He would very likely have been a grandson, and Wealthy her daughter.
  Books titled "History of the
Western Reserve" by Harriet Taylor Upton,
1884, and "Soldiers and Widows of the American Revolution Who Lived in
Lake
County
, Ohio
," by Mildred E. Hoyes Steed both mention Nathan Chappell and Roswell
Rogers as brothers-in-law.   1830 census for Nathan Chappell, Leroy Township,
showed a woman of the appropriate age (80 years, less than 90 years; possibly
Lydia Chappell) residing in his household in 1830.   No woman in the 90-100 year
age bracket lived in Nathan’s household in 1840.   Pension papers for
Lydia
indicate she was living in 1837 in the household of a son-in-law, Adam Flint,
in
Canajoharie Township, Montgomery County, New York.   No mention has been
found of her date of death.   (There is a conflict in this scenario, in that a
"William" Chappell married a
Lydia "Crocker" in Connecticut.   Was "Noah" a
first or middle name for the same man?)

1840 (13 Oct & 30 Oct), E.C. Rogers, Roswell Rogers, and George Rogers vote
in two
October Leroy Township elections.

1841, George R. Rogers marries Eunice Hulbert in
Geauga County.   (He is
believed to be “our” George R.)

1841 (14 July), Roswell Rogers and Wealthy (stated as “wife” in deed grant
title to
Lot 27 property, subject to mtge. To Andrews & Warner, to George
Rogers.
  Witnesses, Gerry Bates (J.P.) and
Israel Comstock.   Vol. 1, page 143.
Lot 27 in Range 7, Township 9 (62.5 acres) $1000. Film page 295.

1841, Roswell Rogers taxed on 6 cattle valued at $48.

1842, George R.
Rogers taxed on 1 horse, 8 cattle all valued at $104.
(Roswell not listed in 1842 – George R. was not previously listed/taxed on personal
property.)

1842, “Noras” Rogers is listed as parent or guardian of Eli, Albert, and
Polly in School Enumeration of white your between ages of four and twenty in 1st
School District of Leroy Township.

1842, George R. Rogers taxed on
Lot 27, valued for taxation purposes at $198.

1843, Erastus C. and George R. Rogers are foreclosed through a Sheriff’s Sale
of Property in adjoining lots 26 and 28, which they had apparently tried to
assemble with the family’s original property in Lot 27.

1843, Recognizance Bond is posted with Lake County by Erastus and George R.
Rogers, and William Wright Jr. to guarantee costs of the Court for the
unsuccessful investigation by Grand Jury of Dan O. Carter.   The jury returned no Bill
of Indictment.   Cause for the action is unknown.

1844, “Norris” Rogers is listed as parent or guardian of Ely Rogers in
School Enumeration of white youth between the ages of four and twenty in 1st School
District of Leroy Township.

1847, No Rogers listed as parents or guardians in School Enumerations.

             Lorana Rogers, 7, Female, Attends school, b. Ohio [1843 Calc. Yr/Birth]

(Lorana is believed to be a child from George R. Rogers’ 1841 marriage to
Eunice Hulbert.   "Eli T." was probably Eli S. C. Rogers, who was indeed a son of
Joseph Noyes L. Rogers, b December 1835.   Neither was listed in the 1847
School Enumeration.)

1851 (8 Sep), George R. Rogers grants deed to Erastus C. Rogers.   Vol. A,
page 604.

Lot 27 in Range 7 Township 9. (62.5 acres) $1000. Film page 295.

1852 , Nathan Chappell dies.   A "newer granite stone" in
Brakeman Cemetery
gives this data (as well as much information about his many children):
Chappell/ Nathan Chappel/

1852, E.C. Rogers, George Rogers, and J.N.L. Rogers all vote in Leroy
Township Election.   This is last record found for J.N.L. in
Ohio.

1853, E.C. Rogers and George R. Rogers vote in
Leroy Township election.

1854 (3 Apr), George R. Rogers votes in
Leroy Township election.

1854 (10 Oct), E.C. Rogers votes in
Leroy Township election, along with
Israel Comstock.
  This is the last record found of Erastus in the Township.

1855 (Jun 15, 16, 19 & Jul 6), Joseph N. L. and Roxanna Rogers of Knox
County, Illinois, Roswell and Martha Rogers of Tioga County, Penn., William and
Parmilla Rogers of Tioga County, Penn., and George R. Rogers of Lake County, Ohio
all quitclaim their interests in the 62.5 acres in Lot 27 to Israel Comstock,
husband of Wealtha (Rogers) Comstock.   According to “Grantor” Deed index, no
other sale of the property preceded this quitclaim of interests.   Since
Erastus is not mentioned in Leroy Township Poll books after 1854, it is assumed he
had died by mid 1855.

1855 (2 Apr), Israel Comstock votes in
Leroy Township.   He is elected as one
of the Supervisors of Highways.

1856 (11 Apr), Israel Comstock sells 62.5 acres to Charles H. Ober for $1200.

marriage to Eunice Hulbert.)

1864 (24 Feb), George R. Rogers marries his 1st cousin once removed, Emily
Beebe, as his second wife in
Lake County.   Emily was the granddaughter of Ezra
Beebe, who was married to Lydia Chappell, the sister of Wealthy (Chappell)
Rogers.

Their relationship was as follows:

                                     (Sisters)

[After 1860 – No more census listings found for George R. Rogers.   Negative
response from National Archives on request for possible Civil War Papers.]

1870 (7 Mar), Israel Comstock dies in
Leroy Township.   His will states Mrs.
Rogers was his wife’s mother.   This corroborates the mention in the "Memorial
to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve," (Ed. by Mrs. Gertrude Van
Renssalaer Whickham, Cleveland, 1896) which states in the chapter on Thompson
Township, Geauga County (immediately east of Leroy Township): “Welthy Rogers, wife
of Israel Comestock, was a pioneer in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and very
eloquent in prayer.”

1870 (27 Mar), Wealtha Comstock dies in
Leroy Township, before she has
accepted Administrator status for her late husband’s estate.   Her son-in-law, John

~~~ PostScript:
Joseph Noyes L. Rogers and his family moved between 1852 and 1855 to Knox and
Henderson Counties of Illinois, and JNL Rogers served in the Union Army in
the Civil War.   They later moved to
Wright County, MN.   There they started to
homestead a property but never completed the process, so no patent for the
land was ever issued to them.   Thereafter they went to
Iowa and were associated
in their last years with their son Eli S. C. Rogers (Also a Union Veteran).
Roswell Rogers Jr. and his wife Martha left
Tioga County, PA, along with
their adopted daughter and homesteaded in
Chippewa County, Wisconsin.
William Rogers and his wife Permelia moved with their family in 1857 to
Stearns and
Meeker Counties of Minnesota, before the family finally settled in
Wright County, MN.   Son Jerome rode with the State Militia after the Sioux
uprising killed hundreds of settlers.   Son Lavanson died of typhoid in the Civil
War, and son Jerome also served, later marrying Lavanson's widow.
